mammals
Have you seen a mammal?

Yes you have - because humans are mammals!

Mammals are all around us, living all over the world.

Let's take a look at some of the typical mammal characteristics.

Mammal Characteristics

• Have a backbone

• Highly developed brain

• Have hair or fur.

• Give birth to live young
(There are some special mammals that lay eggs, like the platypus)

• Mammal mothers produce and feed milk to their young.

• Have lungs and need air to breathe

• Mammals that live on land have 4 legs (or arms) and ears that stick out.

• Warm-blooded

Where do Mammals live?

Mammals are found in every kind of major habitat all over the world!

Most live on land - this can be living underground, on the ground, in the trees, in the mountains, in the dessert, in the coldest places and the warmest.

There are some mammals that live both in the land and the water, like beavers, seals, otters. Some live only in the water, like whales, dolphins, narwhals and manatees.
Marine mammals like whales, narwhals and dolphins have to come up to the surface to breathe through blowholes on their backs.

More about mammals

They can be very tiny, like little mice, or huge like elephants, giraffes and whales.

There are some special mammals that have pouches for their babies to grow in, called marsupials, such as kangaroos, koalas and possums. These mammal babies stay in the mother's pouch until they are fully developed.

Bats are another kind of special mammal because they have 2 wings and can fly, and 2 feet.

More examples of mammals: humans, lions, elephants, monkeys, apes, tigers, whales, dolphins, seals, cats, dogs, hippos, rabbits, mice, foxes, cows, pigs, goats, bats, koalas, platypus, sheep, kangaroos bears, giraffes, chipmunk, cheetah, horses, squirrels, deer, and so many more!
